Desktop or Laptop?

If it is time for you to purchase a new computer the first question you may want to ask yourself is Should I buy a laptop (notebook) or a desk top computer?

Here are issues you may want to think about first.

How much am I willing to spend?

What will I be using the computer for?

If you are making a decision based on money a desktop computer is generally cheaper than an equivalent laptop. When you consider processor speed, memory, both temporary and permanent storage, you will get more for the dollar buying a desktop system. If you already own a decent monitor you can buy a system without a new monitor and this will save you even more money. Perhaps you have an amazing sound system you wish to continue using with a computer. Laptops are not know for their sound quality so you would be better off with a desktop . If you use your computer for high end gaming you will most likely be better off with a desktop. Gamers like to upgrade their video and sound cards and this is not easily accomplished with a laptop.

Just keep in mind that in order to get the latest and greatest in either a desktop or a laptop you will be paying a premium price so consider buying a computer that doesn’t necessarily have the fastest processor on the market, rather one the was introduced to the market about 6 months or a year ago.

If space is an issue a laptop will suit you well. You do not need a dedicated space for your computer as a laptop can be anywhere there is space for you and your computer. Laptops can be taken with you to class, to the library or home for a long weekend. If you wish to use your laptop for Internet access you will be best served with wireless Internet. Many colleges now have wi-fi access in the library and classroom but not in the dorm, there you will have to use an Ethernet cable or you will need to provide a and set up a wireless router. Since a desktop stays put the computer can be wired directly to your Internet source and a wireless access point is not necessary.

If you are drawn to laptop because you like the idea of where ever you go your computer can be with you there are a few more things to think about. The keyboard is critical. If you purchase a desktop and you don’t like the “feel” of the keyboard you can always replace the keyboard for minimal cost. You are stuck with the laptop keyboard, so be sure to give it a good test drive at the store before purchasing a particular brand or model. Consider for the weight. A laptop with a 17 inch screen is a great desktop replacement but the larger the screen the heavier the computer. Ultra portables are thin and light. They have a 12 inch screen and often a removable optical drive to keep them light. It may be difficult to type on a small keyboard and these laptops carry a premium price. You will need a padded laptop case or a backpack that has a padded section made just for the laptop. Laptops are easy to steal so you should also purchase a laptop lock and cable so if you leave your computer behind in the dorm, or even alone for a few minutes at the library or dining hall, it can be attached to a piece of heavy furniture.

To add narration to your PowerPoint

Click the speaker on the task bar and make sure the mute button is not checked.

Click on the Slide Show menu and choose Record Narration. Click the Set Microphone Level button on the right. You’ll see the Microphone Check dialog box pop up, test your recording level.

Proceed through your presentation, pressing the space bar when you want to advance to the next slide. If at any point you want to stop recording, simply press the [Esc] key on your keyboard.

When you reach the last slide, or when you press [Esc], PowerPoint will ask if you’d like to save the slide timings as well as the narration. Click No. View your slide show to test the narration.

Password Protect a PowerPoint Presentation

It is easy to password protect your PowerPoint projects.
Click the Tools menu and select Options.

Click the security tab and enter a password for opening and for modifying your presentation. Re-enter your password when prompted.

Don’t forget your password as there is no way to revcover it!

MHS Students Can Store Files in Yahoo Briefcase

Even though you cannot access email at MHS students can still use Yahoo Briefcase. Go to Yahoo.com scroll down and click More Yahoo Services located on the left side. Click briefcase in the pop up menu. Use your current Yahoo email or create a new account. Yahoo briefcase will hold as much information as 20 floppy disks!

Backup files with email

Looking for an easy free way to back up your files? Then use free email such as Yahoo or Gmail. These accounts provide over 2GB of storage. First compose a letter and address it to yourself. Attach the file and then send.

This is a great way to transport files when you do not have access to a flash drive.

Yahoo briefcase is designed for file storage. Go to http://briefcase.yahoo.com/ and sign up if you do not have a current Yahoo account.
